What is it like to sail away from France, leaving behind a small brown-haired baby? To know for 30 years that, somewhere in the world, there is a boy who looks like you, your son, whose name you do not even know? What is it like to keep this a secret, even from your own parents? And then for him to find you by calling them? Finally you get to meet him, a grown man living in Denmark, a child of your body with whom you do not share a mother tongue. What is it like? It is the best gift you can ever imagine, like rain falling on a dry place. This memoir is a great reunion journey, from Paris, to California, to Denmark! A coming together of a mother and son, the only two people who can answer all the questions the other one has.

It was a time when in the "good" families, daughters who became pregnant outside of marriage were often sent away; and their children given up for adoption never to be seen again. In this story, one young woman who in all innocence becomes pregnant, does the "right" thing; and because she is attending school in a foreign country, is able to hide her condition from her very "proper" family. Only brief precious moments are given to her with her baby boy before he is received by his new mother and father. The loss of her son is a pain that she always carries within her even as she finds joy in a wonderful marriage with three beautiful children. As the years turn and January 2nd - her baby's birthday - comes around 30 times, she always remembers and weeps inside. In her very personal story, Wendy Salisbury Howe carries us page after page along her journey from the loss of her child until he finds her 30 years later; and continues through the followup years of getting to know this man who was her boy. It is an emotional course that we share with Wendy; and once opened, you will find this book hard to put down. This is a very healing story, not just because of the happy ending but because it sheds light and gives a voice to birth mothers and adopted children; but you do not have to have had this experience to appreciate this story. It is a universal tale of loss and redemption, courage, respect and love.

This was a lovely book from both points of view. Wisely handled and a beautiful integration of both familys.
Thanks so much for sharing your story. I am adopted and many of the feelings I have been experiencing in reunion with my first mother are echoed here.
Can’t believe his father didn’t want to be part of his life. Good book written in a relatable style. Well done
A wonderful reunion of mother and son. They both were aware of the others feelings while reconnecting. And found their way back to each other by being thoughtful of each other and each ones own family
Feeling Wendy's pain in giving up her son. I could relate her almost unbearable sorrow. Following her through her life and struggle gave me insight into her pain. I loved this book because some of parallels my own at about the time.
“Thank you for finding me!” Wendy Salisbury Howe, in her book, Like Rain on a Dry Place A Birth Mother’s Story, repeats this gratitude often to the son she reunited with after 30 years. Her memoir reads like a love letter to the son she was forced to give up at birth, when she was 19. She crafts an engrossing narrative, as she candidly relates to us her student year in France, when she unknowingly became pregnant, through the many years of sorrow, loss and regret, and absence she suffers after this time. The story of her reunion with her son, when he is 30, is a page turner, and you cannot help but participate with her in her joy and wonderment. The author’s articulation of this life-changing experience, of the complex and the subtle, as well as the joy and pain writ large, is a gift for birth mothers, but also for all of us to better understand the effects on a life of the loss of a child at birth. This memoir, written by an Episcopalian priest, glows with empathetic understanding, a keen self-knowledge, and fine- tuned spiritual depth.
I have often heard that when birth mother's and children meet, this is eventually unhappy. The love, patience and wisdom in this book could be a guide to handling this situation respectfully for everyone including the Adoptive parents.

The author is kind and considerate with several thoughtful insights for everyone involved to consider; including biological fathers.
The only thing that confused me was why her son became a teacher? It somehow sounded different than the USA in choosing careers. As this is not germane to the story, it's hardly a fault.
