A powerful story that opens and tears at the seams of both language and body. A meditative narrative that looks into the nature of being foreign to self and family and world. In the tradition of Helene Cixous, Marguerite Duras, Clarice Lispector, and others. Okumura gives us a new way for seeing into the abject.
Jordan Okumura's writing is unlike anything I've ever encountered. I simply can't put it into words. It's something you have to experience on your own. Not only is her storytelling beautifully poetic, but it is also raw, deep, real, and emotional. That said, it is not to be taken lightly. Gaijin is an opportunity to dive inside the heart and soul of a story you didn't realize was also your own. Through Okumura's bold and honest unearthing, uncovering, and exploring, you find that she has stirred up your own feelings that perhaps you didn't realize you felt. You realize that because she has opened up herself so wholeheartedly, she allows you permission to do the same.
I highly recommend reading Gaijin, and I look forward to see what Okumura writes next.
