Great Reading
This 1983 episode of The Gunsmith may be a little long in the tooth;but it is one of the wildest and most exciting I've ever read.I guess the publishers must also think so,as they have reissued it again in 2013.
Clint Adams decides a little high living ,high rolling and relaxation is in order,so he heads off for New Orleans,a town he hasn't visited for some time,but a place where he knows excitement reigns supreme.
He gets off to a good start by taking "La Reine Rouge" ,a pleasure ship down the Mississippi to New Orleans.And what a trip it turns out to be;and he hasn't even yet arrived in the "Big O".
Clint isn't in New Orleans long before he is all wrapped up in a whole bunch of crooked business that involves the notorious Gaston Lacombe owner of the "La Reine Rouge",a retired Judge and his cavalier son,crooked as well as honest lawmen and a few of the most exciting southern ladies he has ever encountered.
There are so much action filled scenes in this saga,that one would need a computer ,or at least a scorepad to keep track of the hootowls or "apaches" that meet their maker,in an attempt to bring about the demise of the Gunfighter.
It's a story where the reader just never knows what to expect next.
Then there is the beautiful Marie Labou.I thought it was strange to see her show up,being well aware of that name in New Orleans history.The spelling is a little different,though.Marie Laveau (1801-1881) a Louisiana Creole practitoner of Voodoo in New Orleans.In 1874,12,000 spectators,both black and white,swarmed to the shores of Lake Pontchartrain to catch a glimpse of her performing her legendary rites on St.John's Day (June 23-24).As the time period of these two women is the same,who knows ,maybe they were the one and same.
